Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has asserted that the club’s sporting vision remains completely unambiguous following a significant structural reshuffle at Stamford Bridge. The transition marks the formal conclusion of Todd Boehly’s tenure as chairman, as private equity firm Clearlake Capital moves to assume outright control of the English Premier League outfit.
The London-based club confirmed late Wednesday that Clearlake, guided by co-founders Behdad Eghbali and Jose E. Feliciano, reached an agreement to buy out the equity stakes held by Boehly and club director Mark Walter. The buyout brings an end to the shared governance model that has overseen Chelsea's operations since the spring of 2022.
Boehly and Walter initially teamed up with Clearlake to purchase the West London side from former owner Roman Abramovich in May 2022. That transaction was conducted under strict supervision and mandated by the British government following geopolitical sanctions imposed on Russian-linked assets.
Prior to the conclusion of this latest buyout agreement, Clearlake held a commanding 61.5 percent equity position in the football club. The remaining minority balance of shares had been divided between Boehly, Walter, and Swiss billionaire investor Hansjorg Wyss.
Chelsea made it clear that the ownership restructure will not completely eliminate all initial consortium members. The club announced that Wyss will maintain his position as an important ongoing partner and stakeholder within the restructured organization.
Beyond their football endeavors, both Boehly and Walter hold prominent profiles across the international sports landscape, maintaining co-ownership of Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers. Walter also recently concluded a landmark financial move in North American sports by parting with the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers franchise in a deal valued at $12.5 billion.
According to reporting from the Financial Times, Boehly and Walter are projected to secure approximately 950 million pounds, equivalent to $1.27 billion, for their collective holdings in Chelsea. The transaction establishes an overarching enterprise valuation for the Premier League side at roughly five billion pounds, an amount that accounts for outstanding club debt.
Following the announcement, the club released an official statement reaffirming its long-term objectives under the consolidated ownership structure. The organization highlighted its unwavering determination to compete at the very pinnacle of the sport, secure major silverware, and establish a framework of sustained competitive success.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea's upcoming Premier League fixture against Brentford on Friday, Alonso addressed the media to share his perspective on the corporate transition. The Spanish manager, who formally began his managerial duties at the helm of Stamford Bridge on July 1, characterized the buyout as a momentous milestone in the team's ongoing evolution.
Alonso took time to express his gratitude toward the outgoing executives for their initial investments and leadership during the initial post-takeover phase. While acknowledging that he had not yet arrived during their earliest days at the club, the head coach highlighted that both former partners had played a pivotal part in the club’s modern history.
The head coach emphasized that the clarity in leadership under Eghbali would provide welcome stability for the football operations department. Alonso noted that having a singular and definitive leadership figure at the executive level makes the organizational hierarchy much clearer and easier to navigate for the coaching staff.
Reflecting on his personal recruitment, Alonso revealed that his relationship with Eghbali was instrumental in his decision to take charge of the Blues. He recalled that Eghbali personally traveled to Madrid to present the overarching sporting blueprint and convince him to join the project, emphasizing that the two continue to maintain a strong working relationship.
Since the original consortium completed the acquisition in 2022, Chelsea’s highest domestic league campaign occurred during the 2024/25 season, when they secured a fourth-place Premier League finish. During that same campaign, the club expanded its trophy cabinet by winning both the UEFA Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, Alonso was brought in with a clear directive to transform an underperforming playing squad following a disappointing domestic campaign that saw Chelsea slip to a 10th-place finish in the league table. The former Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen tactician faces the demanding task of returning the squad to consistent title contention.
The current season has seen the West Londoners produce a mixed run of results during the opening weeks of the domestic campaign. Chelsea currently occupy sixth place in the Premier League standings after collecting seven points from their first four league fixtures under Alonso's stewardship.
The buyout agreement extends past English borders, as Boehly and Walter have simultaneously divested their equity in Chelsea’s continental partner club, French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg. That transaction effectively grants Clearlake unfettered control across both European football properties as the investment firm consolidates its wider multi-club enterprise.
