Global football star Cristiano Ronaldo has called on sporting authorities to enforce lifetime bans against supporters who directed offensive chants referencing the late Diogo Jota toward Ruben Neves during a recent Saudi Pro League fixture. The Al-Nassr forward voiced strong outrage after video clips emerged showing spectators taunting his compatriot during a domestic league encounter.
The incident took place on Saturday during a top-flight match between Al-Taawoun and visiting side Al-Hilal, staged in the Saudi Arabian city of Buraydah. What was meant to be a standard league fixture was marred when sections of the crowd began invoking the memory of Neves’s deceased former teammate from the stands.
According to video recordings captured from the spectator terraces and circulated widely across social media networks, supporters could be heard repeatedly chanting the name of Jota. The vocal taunts were aimed directly at Neves, seeking to unsettle the Portuguese midfielder on the pitch by referencing a profound personal tragedy.
Diogo Jota tragically lost his life on July 3, 2025, alongside his brother, Andre Silva, following a fatal car collision in the northwestern Spanish municipality of Zamora. The sudden and devastating death of the footballer sent shockwaves through the sporting world and deeply affected his closest peers.
Neves and Jota shared a close personal bond, having played together as teammates and maintained a deep friendship off the field. The depth of their connection was evident in the aftermath of the tragedy, as Neves served as one of the pallbearers during Jota’s funeral services.
During Saturday’s match in Buraydah, the disparaging shouts from the stands quickly caught the attention of Neves. In response to the crowd's targeted chanting, the Al-Hilal midfielder acknowledged the taunts on the field by pointing directly to his eye before raising his hand to gesture upward toward the sky in tribute to his late friend.
Following the final whistle, Neves addressed the unsavoury episode as he exited the venue. Walking through the stadium's mixed zone, the Portuguese international offered a brief and pointed remark regarding the morality of the individuals involved, stating that he hoped those who participated in the chants would not proceed to pray afterwards.
Despite the hostile atmosphere and emotional distress provoked by the chants, Neves contributed substantially to his team's performance on the pitch. The midfielder featured for 75 minutes of the match before being substituted, helping Al-Hilal secure a commanding 6-0 victory over their hosts, Al-Taawoun.
The footage of the terrace chanting quickly attracted widespread condemnation across social media, prompting Ronaldo to intervene publicly. The veteran attacker, who currently competes in the Saudi Pro League for Riyadh-based side Al-Nassr, utilized his personal Instagram account to respond directly under a post displaying the incident.
In his social media response, Ronaldo demanded that administrative bodies step in immediately to establish strict boundaries and penalize those responsible. Ronaldo stated firmly that the domestic league must take decisive action and punish such supporter behaviour, emphasizing that these actions no longer represent the spirit of football.
Ronaldo stressed the urgent necessity of drawing a definitive line against personal malice in the sport. He argued that there must be clear limits to what is tolerated from the stands, declaring that individuals who conduct themselves in such a manner should permanently forfeit the privilege of attending matches and never be permitted inside a stadium again.
The fallout from the match prompted swift formal action from Neves’s club. On Sunday, Al-Hilal Club Company published an official statement on their website confirming that they had formally lodged a complaint regarding the spectator behaviour with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation.
In their published communication, Al-Hilal expressed complete confidence that governing authorities would introduce appropriate disciplinary measures to safeguard the integrity of sporting competitions from offensive practices. The club underscored its absolute rejection of malicious actions aimed at players or their families, firmly condemning attempts to inflict personal offence.
Shortly after Al-Hilal’s announcement on Sunday, Al-Taawoun also issued an official public statement strongly denouncing the behaviour observed among spectators during the home fixture. The host club made clear that the offensive chanting was completely unacceptable and in direct opposition to the culture they strive to maintain.
Al-Taawoun clarified that the disparaging remarks did not reflect the identity of the club, the broader fan base, or the core sporting values for which their home terraces are known. The team expressed regret over the conduct and distanced the organization from the individuals responsible.
To conclude their statement, Al-Taawoun affirmed their commitment to working alongside official bodies to address the situation. The club pledged to coordinate with relevant authorities to enforce all necessary measures, with the dual aim of holding the offending spectators fully accountable and ensuring that similar incidents do not recur in future fixtures.
