Ed Sheeran Attributes Macklemore’s US Tour Removal to Promoter Pressure and Venue Boycotts

English singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran has publicly addressed the sudden removal of American hip-hop artist Macklemore from his United States concert tour, placing the responsibility on his tour promoter and mounting pushback from stadium operators. The controversy erupted after Macklemore delivered impassioned pro-Palestine remarks during a recent live performance on the tour.

Addressing the situation in a detailed six-slide statement shared on Instagram, Sheeran stated that it had become necessary to clearly outline the facts surrounding the tour lineup change. The pop star sought to clarify his own role and explain the commercial and logistical tensions that ultimately led to the decision.

The controversy originated earlier this month during a stop on Sheeran’s US Loop Tour at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During his performance, Macklemore, whose given name is Ben Haggerty, voiced strong solidarity with Palestinians, leading the crowd with slogans including "Free Palestine" and sharing related commentary from the stage.

Following that performance, several venue operators and stadium executives warned tour organizers that future tour dates would be canceled if Macklemore remained part of the roster. Sheeran explained that the pushback from venues was primarily directed at the specific way Macklemore conveyed certain portions of his message during the set, rather than the broad sentiment itself.

In his online message, Sheeran detailed his attempts to de-escalate the standoff, noting that he had spent the preceding week in extensive discussions with venue officials in an effort to find a workable compromise and preserve the tour's schedule. Despite those efforts, the promoter ultimately made the formal determination to drop the rapper from the remaining dates.

Among the most prominent figures behind the venue backlash was Robert Kraft, the billionaire owner of the National Football League’s New England Patriots. Kraft confirmed that he actively applied pressure on tour organizers and Sheeran to ensure Macklemore’s removal from the remaining stadium stops.

Kraft formally barred the rapper from taking the stage at Gillette Stadium, the Patriots' home venue in Foxborough, Massachusetts, where Sheeran is scheduled to perform later this month. The sports executive cited what he characterized as a broader pattern of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery associated with Macklemore as the reason for denying him access to the facility.

In an official statement, Kraft maintained that the decision to exclude the rapper was not intended to minimize the ongoing suffering of innocent Palestinian civilians. Instead, he argued that political advocacy should not be pursued at the direct expense of the Jewish community, nor should it obscure the accountability and responsibility of Hamas in the conflict.

Macklemore shared his own perspective on social media, describing a private conversation with Sheeran in which the British singer reportedly disclosed that Kraft had coordinated a broader boycott effort among other major stadium owners to force the rapper off the tour.

The rapper criticized the reaction to his stage comments, expressing disbelief that his spoken words could generate more outrage among venue owners than the deaths of tens of thousands of Palestinian children killed during Israel's military campaign. He pointed to what he described as a deep moral disconnect between those demanding his removal and his own ethical position.

Despite the abrupt split, Macklemore acknowledged Sheeran as a close personal friend with whom he had discussed the issue at length. However, he expressed frustration with Sheeran’s reluctance to take a public stand on the ongoing war in Gaza, suggesting the singer remained constrained by a desire to avoid publicly picking a side.

Sheeran directly addressed his silence on the conflict in his statement, rejecting accusations that his neutrality equates to indifference or complicity. The musician stated that he is appalled by the devastating conflict between Israel and Palestine and emphasized that holding personal convictions does not require him to make public declarations.

Explaining his personal approach to his public platform, Sheeran argued that audiences who purchase tickets to his stadium concerts do so seeking entertainment rather than a political forum. While he expressed respect for Macklemore’s willingness to publicly advocate for his beliefs, Sheeran stated that his own objective is to maintain spaces of diplomacy, safety, and sanctuary where conversations remain open.

The promoter's decision to drop Macklemore has since triggered wider fallout among the other supporting acts on the US Loop Tour. A succession of prominent musical artists announced their immediate departure from the tour in protest over Macklemore’s removal and to demonstrate solidarity with both the rapper and the Palestinian people.

Among those resigning from their tour spots on Tuesday were Danish pop group Lukas Graham, Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe, Irish folk band Beoga, and American producer and musician Finneas. Their collective departure highlights the intensifying tensions within the live entertainment industry as performers, promoters, and venue operators clash over political expression and the ongoing Israel-Palestine war.
