Iran Claims Seizure of US Autonomous Submersible in Strait of Hormuz Amid Escalating Maritime Clashes

Iranian naval units operating under the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps have claimed to have captured an unmanned American submersible near the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz. The reported seizure occurs amid a series of retaliatory maritime strikes between Tehran and Washington, as both powers continue to contest operational control over the critical passage linking the Gulf and the Arabian Sea.

Iranian state media identified the captured hardware as a Dive-LD autonomous underwater vehicle, a platform manufactured by the California-based defense contractor Anduril Industries. Measuring roughly six meters, or 20 feet, in length, the autonomous vessel is built to carry out extended underwater missions including environmental surveillance, seabed mapping, and naval mine detection.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps released a statement on Tuesday evening asserting that its naval wing had intercepted one of the American military's most advanced autonomous submersibles. Iranian military officials described the action as a sophisticated dawn intelligence and operational maneuver, claiming the vehicle embodied premier global sub-surface technology and had been delivered to the United States fleet in 2025.

In contrast, United States officials have pushed back against Iranian characterizations of a tactical capture, asserting that the autonomous drone had suffered a mechanical breakdown a day before the incident occurred. While the United States government has not released a formal public declaration on the matter, American defense sources moved quickly to clarify the circumstances surrounding the lost platform.

An unnamed spokesperson from the Pentagon confirmed the loss of the vessel to the Reuters news agency, noting that the drone had been assigned to conduct regional maritime surveys in support of broader operational initiatives. The official emphasized that the craft was an older, defective model that was neither collecting sensitive intelligence nor outfitted with classified sonar or radar mechanisms.

The system's manufacturer, Anduril Industries, confirmed the loss of one of its submersibles but similarly minimized the operational impact of the event. A company representative stated on Wednesday that the Dive-LD is categorized as an attritable autonomous asset, meaning the vehicle is deliberately designed for high-risk maritime environments where the potential loss of the unit is an acknowledged operational reality.

According to specifications published by Anduril, the Dive-LD platform is an autonomous and reusable system designed to reach depths of up to 6,000 meters, or approximately 19,700 feet, while maintaining mission endurance for up to ten days. Reportedly priced at around $2.5 million, the vessel’s operational depth rating significantly exceeds the depth of roughly 3,346 meters where the commercial Titan submersible suffered a fatal implosion in June 2023.

The manufacturer highlights that the Dive-LD utilizes an open architecture for its software, mechanical, and electrical components, allowing operators to quickly configure diverse sensor and payload configurations. The company advertises the craft as an affordable capability capable of rapid integration within weeks for tasks ranging from mine warfare and precision equipment placement to intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and operational environment preparation.

The incident at the entrance of the Strait of Hormuz coincides with sharp escalations in kinetic engagements across the surrounding waters. On Tuesday evening, the United States military announced that it had struck and destroyed five Iranian crude oil carriers following ballistic missile strikes launched by Iranian forces against an American naval warship over the previous two days.

Tehran further escalated its claims following the strikes, asserting that its forces had targeted two American naval vessels as well as eight commercial oil tankers. The competing strikes on commercial and naval shipping underline the growing volatility surrounding international transport corridors connecting the Gulf to broader trade routes.

The maritime tensions form part of an expansive conflict that began in late February, when the United States and Israel launched extensive military strikes against Iranian targets. The initial phase of the offensive resulted in the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was subsequently succeeded in the country's leadership by his son, Mojtaba Khamenei.

The sustained campaign has produced significant casualties and widespread destruction across multiple territories. Nearly 8,000 individuals have been killed across Iran and Lebanon during American and Israeli operations, while at least 18 American service personnel have died since the start of the conflict.

Iran has responded to the ongoing air campaign by staging retaliatory strikes against regional installations housing American forces. Targets struck during these retaliatory operations include the Al Udeid facility in Qatar, the Ali Al Salem base in Kuwait, and the Al Dhafra air base located within the United Arab Emirates.

Substantial damage has also been recorded at the headquarters of the United States Navy's Fifth Fleet in Bahrain. Defense officials in Washington project that repair expenses for the damaged facilities in Bahrain could reach into the billions of dollars, as sustained hostilities continue to deplete American munitions reserves and trigger major disruptions across international energy markets.
