LIV Golf Files for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Protection as Massive Liabilities and Restructuring Plans Emerge

LIV Golf, the disruptive circuit that upended professional golf with unprecedented financial outlays, has officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in a New Jersey court. The petition marks a dramatic turn of events for the high-spending enterprise, exposing deep financial imbalances and forcing the organization to overhaul its entire business structure in order to survive.

The bankruptcy filing arrives less than five years after the league staged its inaugural tournament in 2022, an arrival that ignited an acrimonious divide across elite golf. Under United States Chapter 11 regulations, the filing serves as a reorganization mechanism rather than a liquidation, granting LIV Golf the legal authority to maintain control of its business operations as a debtor-in-possession while renegotiating its outstanding obligations under judicial oversight.

Court documentation has provided the first transparent look into the league’s strained financial health, revealing estimated liabilities ranging between $500 million and $1 billion. The filing indicates that LIV Golf owes money to at least 1,000 separate creditors across the sports and corporate sectors, reflecting the vast scale of the league’s unpaid commitments.

Among the most prominent names listed in the bankruptcy documents are the marquee golfers who were originally recruited to bolster the venture’s credibility. High-profile athletes hold millions of dollars in unsecured claims, led by two-time major winner Jon Rahm of Spain, whose unpaid claim stands at $7.5 million—the largest single liability owed to any player on the tour.

Other headline players are similarly positioned as major unsecured creditors seeking payment from the league. American star Bryson DeChambeau is owed $5.7 million, followed closely by former world number one Dustin Johnson at $5.5 million and Australian standout Cameron Smith at $4.8 million. England’s Tyrrell Hatton holds an unpaid claim of $3.4 million, while Brooks Koepka, who departed LIV at the start of 2026, is listed as a creditor for $1.7 million.

The insolvency filing comes after a severe financial blow delivered by the sudden departure of the league’s primary backer, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF). Since LIV's founding in 2022, the sovereign wealth vehicle had committed roughly $5 billion into the project to bankroll massive player contracts and historic tournament purses before abruptly severing its primary funding pipeline.

Signs of severe operational distress had escalated rapidly in recent weeks leading up to Tuesday's court submission. LIV had already terminated a large majority of its administrative workforce earlier this month and was forced to cancel its flagship season-ending team championship in August once the withdrawal of direct Saudi capital took effect.

Despite pulling the plug on its broader open-ended backing, the PIF is maintaining a structured role during the legal reorganization. The sovereign fund has agreed to provide a bankruptcy loan of $49.6 million—nearly $50 million—to finance the league’s ongoing operations and legal process as it navigates the Chapter 11 framework.

To facilitate its operational turnaround, LIV Golf has also allied with BC Partners, a prominent British private investment group. The collaboration is intended to assist the sports organization in revamping its fiscal model and securing alternative outside investment following the termination of direct sovereign subsidies.

Management has maintained that the Chapter 11 process is designed to serve as a bridge toward an updated platform branded as LIV Golf “2.0.” Tour administrators have previously indicated that this revamped product will re-emerge for the upcoming season operating under a substantially modified format, which will include a streamlined tournament schedule and lowered purse payouts.

LIV Golf Chief Executive Scott O’Neil addressed the filing in a formal letter to supporters, characterizing the move as a vital strategic pivot rather than a collapse. O’Neil explained that entering court-supervised restructuring offers the league the legal framework and necessary breathing space to resolve legacy debt obligations while finalizing transactions essential to securing a viable, enduring foundation for the enterprise.

O’Neil stated that the circuit intends to continue staging professional events across several of its most commercially receptive international markets. The tour's proposed calendar is set to retain stops in Australia, South Africa, Mexico, Hong Kong, and England, alongside continued tournament operations within the United States.

Under the new operational strategy outlined by O’Neil, LIV plans to pivot toward a sustainable business framework heavily anchored around its proprietary team format. The blueprint envisions participating players holding direct equity stakes in the value generated by the series, while individual franchises are positioned to grow into self-sustaining global commercial properties.

However, the viability of a restructured tour faces significant hurdles regarding player retention. With the league scaling down financial rewards and facing severe debt reorganization, industry attention is heavily focused on whether elite attractions like Rahm and DeChambeau will remain committed to the downsized platform or seek exits.

Widespread industry speculation has continuously connected several top LIV competitors to potential returns to traditional circuits, including the PGA Tour. Nevertheless, any immediate reintegration remains improbable for now, as the PGA Tour has affirmed that it currently has no frameworks or plans in place to offer defected LIV players a pathway back into its sanctioned competitions.
