American rapper Macklemore has announced that he will donate the entire $1 million in earnings he received from Ed Sheeran’s Loop Tour to organizations dedicated to supporting Palestinians. The pledge comes immediately following the artist's dismissal from the remaining United States dates of the tour, a move triggered by his vocal statements in support of Palestine during recent live performances.
The musician, whose legal name is Ben Haggerty, shared the major financial commitment on his Instagram account on Wednesday. He specified that the funds would be distributed directly among six charitable organizations that are actively engaged in providing on-the-ground assistance and relief to Palestinians facing hardship.
In addition to announcing his donation, Macklemore publicly called on billionaire Robert Kraft, the owner of the NFL’s New England Patriots, to match the $1 million contribution. The challenge came after Kraft confirmed on Tuesday that he had personally barred Macklemore from performing at Gillette Stadium, the prominent sports and concert venue in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
Explaining his motivation for the donation, Macklemore emphasized a fundamental moral standard regarding the value of human life. He stated in his public message that regardless of ongoing disagreements, people should agree that Palestinian lives are worth protecting, stressing that a Palestinian life holds no less value than any other life across the globe.
Kraft responded to the public challenge on Wednesday evening with a statement detailing earlier charitable discussions involving Ed Sheeran. According to Kraft, Sheeran had already phoned him prior to Macklemore's public challenge to request that the Patriots owner commit $2 million in humanitarian relief funding to the affected region.
Kraft further explained that Sheeran intends to build upon this initiative by approaching other stadium and venue owners throughout the tour circuit in an effort to raise additional financial aid. In his formal remarks regarding the matter, Kraft affirmed his own belief that all human lives are fundamentally worth protecting.
The donation and subsequent exchange between Macklemore and Kraft highlight the expanding fallout surrounding the rapper’s sudden removal from the concert series. Macklemore revealed on Monday that he was dropped from the tour’s upcoming American dates after using his set at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey to openly voice his support for the Palestinian cause.
The decision to cut the rapper provoked an immediate and coordinated reaction from the rest of the tour's lineup. In a demonstration of solidarity with Macklemore, all of the supporting acts scheduled to open for Sheeran’s upcoming US Loop Tour dates decided to pull out of their scheduled appearances.
Among the departing support acts were several Irish musicians who explicitly connected their decision to withdraw with their own cultural background. These performers pointed directly to Ireland’s historical experience with foreign occupation as the guiding reason behind their refusal to perform following Macklemore's removal.
Addressing the controversy surrounding his tour, Sheeran sought to clarify the administrative responsibility behind the artist's removal. The British singer-songwriter stated that the decision to eliminate Macklemore from the concert schedule was ultimately executed by the tour's US promoter rather than being initiated by Sheeran himself.
Kraft later clarified his specific objections to the rapper's presence at his venue, stating that he opposed allowing Macklemore to perform due to what he characterized as a past record of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery.
In an official statement provided to Al Jazeera, Kraft maintained that the decision to bar the artist from Gillette Stadium was not intended to diminish the profound suffering endured by innocent Palestinians. However, Kraft argued that public advocacy must not occur at the direct expense of the Jewish community or serve to obscure the responsibility held by Hamas.
In his Wednesday statement, Macklemore sought to redirect attention away from his personal career and the public disputes surrounding the concert tour. He stated that the issue has never been about him, the tour, or media headlines, but rather about the fundamental rights of Palestinians to experience freedom, dignity, and security within their homeland.
The artist also reflected on the privilege and safety associated with financial contributions, noting that writing a check carries far fewer personal risks than the daily realities faced by people in Gaza or grassroots organizers actively working on behalf of Palestinians.
Macklemore described monetary support as one of the least costly forms of solidarity available to him, remarking that he chose to contribute simply because he had the means to do so while large segments of the international community continue to debate the broader crisis.
Concluding his message, Macklemore issued an appeal urging the public to maintain continuous awareness of the issue. He cautioned supporters that while the mainstream media cycle will inevitably move on to other stories, the public must not shift its focus away from supporting a free Palestine.
