American hip-hop artist Macklemore has been removed from the remaining supporting dates of Ed Sheeran’s concert tour after several major venues refused to host him over his outspoken advocacy for Palestine. The decision follows growing fallout from his recent appearances and statements regarding the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
The controversy reached a peak when billionaire Robert Kraft, whose organization owns and manages Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, confirmed that the rapper was prohibited from performing at the facility. Macklemore had been scheduled to open for Sheeran at the venue on September 25 and September 26 before the management intervened to bar his appearance.
In an official statement, Kraft asserted that Macklemore’s recent live performances, alongside what he characterized as a wider record of antisemitic language and visual motifs, caused Gillette Stadium leadership to conclude that permitting him on stage would cross an unacceptable threshold.
Kraft emphasized that the venue's prohibition was not intended to minimize the hardship experienced by civilians in Palestine or prevent individuals from speaking out on their behalf. However, he maintained that such activism should never come at the expense of Jewish people or diminish the culpability of Hamas, pointing out that the group’s actions have inflicted deep pain across both Israeli and Palestinian populations.
The tour's organizer, Messina Touring Group, officially confirmed the artist's removal from the lineup in remarks provided to Rolling Stone magazine. The promoter explained that multiple venues scheduled for upcoming dates in the United States had made it clear that concerts featuring Macklemore on the roster would not be permitted to proceed.
According to Messina Touring Group, proceeding with the original lineup would have inevitably triggered widespread cancellations, disrupting the entire tour and negatively affecting hundreds of thousands of ticket holders. As a result of discussions among key industry stakeholders, the decision was finalized to remove the rapper from the rest of the scheduled tour dates.
Macklemore initially made the situation public through an extensive statement posted to his Instagram account, informing his followers that Sheeran and his management team had resolved to exclude him from The Loop tour. The musician noted that he wanted to address the matter directly and share what had occurred behind the scenes.
In his online post, Macklemore alleged that Sheeran had told him directly that Kraft was blocking his performance at Gillette Stadium. Furthermore, the rapper claimed that Kraft had organized with other venue operators to issue a collective ultimatum, threatening that Sheeran would lose access to various stadiums if Macklemore remained an opening act on the tour.
While Kraft publicly acknowledged barring Macklemore from Gillette Stadium, he did not offer any direct response or comment concerning the allegations that he had coordinated an industry-wide boycott across other stadium owners.
The escalating dispute stems from Macklemore’s recent performances on September 4 and September 5 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. During those tour stops, the rapper repeatedly declared his support for the Palestinian cause and performed his track "Hind’s Hall," an activist anthem inspired by the pro-Palestinian university demonstrations that emerged across the country.
Following the MetLife Stadium concerts, public opposition began to mount quickly, led by organizations such as the Israeli American Council, which launched a petition demanding that the rapper be removed from Sheeran's tour entirely.
The criticism within the entertainment community gained further visibility when singer Pink reposted critiques directed at Macklemore’s onstage rhetoric, with the circulated posts demanding public apologies as well as financial refunds for concertgoers who attended the event.
Reflecting on the controversy, Macklemore argued that his messaging likely faced heightened resistance because he was delivering it alongside one of the world's most prominent musical acts. He suggested that sharing a platform with an artist of Sheeran’s stature gave the message of Palestinian liberation broader visibility, which intensified the efforts to silence it.
Macklemore also spoke about his personal relationship with Sheeran, noting that the two have shared a friendship spanning 13 years. He acknowledged that the two had engaged in multiple challenging dialogues over the previous week as the controversy grew, remarking on Sheeran's hesitation to compromise his public posture of remaining neutral on the war in Gaza.
Neither Sheeran nor his media representatives have released an official public statement regarding the removal, and independent verification of the private discussions between the two musicians has not been established.
Addressing the broader landscape of the controversy, Macklemore stressed that neither he, Sheeran, nor Pink should be viewed as victims amid the ongoing global crisis.
Concluding his public remarks, the rapper expressed his hope that his longstanding personal bond with Sheeran would endure the fallout from the tour cancellation, while reiterating that he had no regrets about using his platform to voice support for Palestinian freedom.
