Samson Fires Rapid Half-Century as India Rout Afghanistan to Clinch T20 Series

India established an unassailable 2-0 lead in their three-match Twenty20 international series against Afghanistan, cruising to an emphatic seven-wicket win in the second contest on Tuesday. Powered by a devastating batting display at the top of the order, the touring side made light work of their modest target, wrapping up the contest with more than five overs to spare.

Wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson led the charge with an explosive innings of 57 from just 22 deliveries. Samson, who was named player of the tournament at this year’s T20 World Cup final, registered his first half-century since that showcase event, dismantling the Afghan bowling attack with seven boundaries and four towering sixes.

The comprehensive victory followed an almost identical script to Sunday’s series opener at the same venue, where India also triumphed by a margin of seven wickets. With two commanding team performances under their belt, the Indian side has firmly secured the series trophy, leaving Afghanistan searching for answers ahead of the third and final fixture.

Playing under a unique operational arrangement in which Afghanistan served as the official host, the designated home team once again struggled to set a competitive total. After winning the coin toss and electing to field first, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer watched his bowling unit dismantle Afghanistan's batting lineup with clinical discipline.

Afghanistan’s innings suffered an immediate setback when explosive opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz was dismissed without scoring. It marked a difficult ongoing stretch for the batter, who recorded his second straight duck of the series after falling victim to an early breakthrough from left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh.

Following Gurbaz’s early departure, Afghan skipper Ibrahim Zadran attempted to reconstruct the innings and stabilize the top order. Zadran played a measured hand of 37 runs from 33 deliveries, ensuring that his side avoided suffering widespread casualties during the mandatory field restrictions of the powerplay overs.

Despite Zadran’s steadying presence, the Afghan batting effort completely unraveled during the middle phase of the innings. The hosts tumbled dramatically from a relatively stable position of 59-2 to 100-6, losing four key wickets in rapid succession as India’s bowlers applied unrelenting pressure.

Indian all-rounder Nitish Reddy proved to be the chief architect of that middle-order collapse. Reddy struck twice during the pivotal slump, finishing with impressive figures of 3-24 across his three overs to halt Afghanistan’s momentum and leave their innings in serious jeopardy.

Facing the prospect of total containment, Afghanistan managed to claw their way back to a defendable score thanks to an aggressive counter-attacking partnership between experienced campaigners Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi. The veteran pair combined for an invaluable 48-run alliance off only 28 deliveries for the seventh wicket.

Rashid led the lower-order resurgence with a brisk 28 from 16 balls, highlighted by three boundaries and a six, while Nabi provided crucial support with 20 runs off 14 deliveries. Their late acceleration dragged Afghanistan to a final total of 159-8 from their allotted 20 overs, though it still represented an under-par tally on a true batting surface.

In response, India launched a ferocious pursuit from the opening delivery. Opening pair Samson and Abhishek Sharma dismantled the Afghan attack, racking up an astonishing 88-run partnership from only 38 deliveries and completely extinguishing Afghanistan's hopes of defending their score.

Afghanistan adjusted their tactical approach from the first match by deploying spin early during the powerplay, but the strategic alteration failed to stem the flow of runs. Sharma was particularly destructive, smashing four sixes in his 19-ball 39 as India raced to a commanding 82-0 by the end of the sixth over.

Samson was in irrepressible form, reaching his seventh career T20 international half-century off just 20 deliveries. His blistering assault propelled India to the 100-run team milestone in a mere 7.1 overs, marking the joint second-fastest team century for the nation in T20 international cricket since 2024.

Rashid Khan briefly stemmed the onslaught when introduced in the seventh over, single-handedly claiming three Indian wickets. Rashid broke the opening stand by having Sharma caught at deep midwicket, removed Samson caught at long-off later in the same over, and subsequently dismissed Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer caught at slip.

Despite Rashid’s late triple strike, the outcome was never in doubt. Ishan Kishan took control of the remaining chase, striking an unbeaten 38, while Tilak Varma added a composed 15 not out to guide India to 163-3 in just 14.5 overs and comfortably seal the three-match series.
