Severe Housing Shortages and Substandard Lodgings Spark Outcry Ahead of Asian Games in Japan

Preparations for the 20th Asian Games in Japan have been overshadowed by mounting controversy as visiting sports delegations voice fierce frustration over what South Korean officials have labeled the worst accommodation conditions in the event’s history. With the regional multi-sport tournament getting underway in Nagoya and the surrounding Aichi prefecture, widespread shortages and subpar facilities have raised urgent concerns regarding athlete welfare.

Unlike previous editions of the massive sporting event, organizers chose not to construct a centralized, dedicated athletes' village in an effort to curb operational expenses. Instead, the organizing committee opted for a fragmented housing strategy that depends on a combination of temporary wooden container cabins, commercial hotels, and a chartered ocean cruise ship to accommodate thousands of arriving participants.

The makeshift lodging arrangements have quickly drawn sharp rebukes from sports federations, particularly the Korea Basketball Association. Jung Jae-yong, the association’s vice president, openly criticized the cramped conditions provided for the men’s national team, stating that in his extensive sporting experience, the current housing setup represents an unprecedented low point for a major competition.

A major grievance centers on the physical dimensions of the temporary wooden huts, which are designed like shipping containers. According to Jung, the beds supplied in these units are far too short for tall players, leaving athletes who measure over two meters in height completely unable to stretch out their legs to rest properly before and during high-stakes games.

The structural integrity of the temporary cabins has also come under fire after South Korean basketball player Byeon Jun-hyeong shared a video on social media showing water leaking heavily from a sink and saturating the floor of his living quarters. Accompanying the footage, the player posted an urgent appeal for help to resolve the deteriorating conditions within the room.

These temporary container huts are intended to house approximately 2,000 competitors and delegation officials throughout the two-week duration of the games. Anticipating severe spatial challenges in these modular units, sports officials from India took the unusual step of constructing full-scale replica cabins back home to help their athletes adapt to the confined quarters prior to their arrival in Japan.

Compounding the logistical difficulties, recent severe weather has already exposed significant vulnerabilities in the tournament's lodging infrastructure. Last week, hundreds of competitors had to be quickly evacuated from their quarters when record-setting torrential rainfall struck the Nagoya area, and meteorologists have warned that additional heavy rain could hit the region in the coming days.

Communication breakdowns have further heightened tensions between team delegations and the local organizing committee. South Korean basketball leadership reported that event organizers have remained silent and failed to formally address their complaints, prompting team officials to engage in urgent, high-level discussions with the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee to find immediate remedies.

A representative from the Korean Sport and Olympic Committee confirmed that the housing crisis extends far beyond their individual national squad. The official emphasized that a severe shortage of suitable rooms is currently affecting numerous international delegations stationed across the Aichi-Nagoya region, noting that committee staff are working around the clock to mitigate the ongoing disruption.

The acute accommodation crunch stems in part from unprecedented attendance figures, with more than 17,000 athletes and accompanying team officials expected to participate. This total surpasses the scale of the Summer Olympic Games and significantly exceeds the initial planning estimates of 15,000 participants that organizers had previously projected for the event.

As numbers swelled in the lead-up to the competition, Japanese organizers acknowledged the mounting strain, admitting last month that they lacked the necessary budget and workforce to properly manage the dramatic surge in attendees. In response to mounting anxiety, the Olympic Council of Asia intervened to offer assurances that every participating delegation member would ultimately receive lodging.

The strain on local infrastructure has forced several participating nations to improvise their own housing solutions. Abraham Tolentino, president of the Philippine Olympic Committee, confirmed that while all of his country’s athletes secured rooms, logistical bottlenecks required some coaching staff and delegation officials to be dispersed across various independent hotels and private Airbnb rentals.

To help absorb the massive influx of competitors, organizers chartered the Italian cruise liner Costa Serena, which is scheduled to dock in Nagoya to serve as floating quarters for between 4,000 and 5,000 athletes. Other participants are scattered across regional hotel networks, with some teams based in Tokyo, where competitions in equestrian sports, diving, and swimming are slated to take place.

With preliminary matches in basketball and football already taking place prior to Saturday's official opening ceremony, high-profile competitors, including prominent international cricketers, continue to voice worries about the overall standard of available accommodations. As the competition progresses, organizers face growing scrutiny over whether their cost-saving housing strategy can adequately support the thousands of athletes striving for continental glory.
