Supporting Acts Boycott Ed Sheeran’s US Tour Over Macklemore’s Pro-Palestine Dismissal

English pop star Ed Sheeran is facing a sweeping walkout by his opening acts ahead of his upcoming North American tour, as every scheduled supporting performer has pulled out to protest the expulsion of American rapper Macklemore. The coordinated departures follow the decision to remove Macklemore from the concert lineup after he expressed vocal support for Palestinians during a recent stadium performance.

The widespread cancellations arrive just days before Sheeran is scheduled to launch his North American Loop Tour on September 19 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The collective withdrawal of his supporting acts has left the stadium tour in turmoil, highlighting deepening cultural and political tensions within the international live music industry regarding the ongoing conflict in the Palestinian territories.

The dispute originated earlier this month during a performance at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, where Macklemore, whose legal name is Ben Haggerty, served as an opening act for Sheeran. While addressing the audience, the rapper delivered an onstage speech highlighting global humanitarian struggles and specifically calling for freedom across several regions, including the occupied Palestinian territories.

During his New Jersey set, Macklemore declared to the crowd that people across Gaza and the occupied West Bank had not been forgotten, explicitly uttering the phrase "Free Palestine" while also extending similar messages of solidarity to Lebanon, Cuba, the Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and Iran. He also performed his protest track "Hind’s Hall," later maintaining that advocating for the universal equality and protection of human beings should never be considered a controversial stance.

The song referenced Hind Rajab, a five-year-old girl who was killed by Israeli forces while trapped inside a vehicle in Gaza. It also drew inspiration from the 2024 student demonstrations at Columbia University, where demonstrators took over Hamilton Hall, an iconic campus building, and symbolically renamed the facility "Hind’s Hall" in protest against Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip.

Macklemore’s onstage declarations quickly generated fierce pushback, prompting the Israeli-American Council to launch a formal petition demanding his removal from the concert series. The controversy subsequently escalated into venue-level intervention, with Macklemore disclosing via social media that Sheeran informed him that Robert Kraft, the billionaire owner of Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts, had barred him from performing at the arena and had reportedly lobbied other venue operators to take similar punitive measures.

In response to the growing fallout, Sheeran published a statement on Tuesday attempting to distance himself from the decision by placing responsibility on the tour’s American concert promoter. The British singer stated that he spent extensive time throughout the week conversing with venue operators to find common ground, explaining he was told the disciplinary action stemmed specifically from the manner in which Macklemore presented portions of his message rather than the entirety of his spoken remarks.

Despite Sheeran’s clarification, multiple artists slated to join the tour issued public announcements withdrawing their participation. American singer-songwriter Finneas confirmed his exit on Instagram, declaring that musical performers must never be silenced when using their public platforms to defend the oppressed. Finneas, who shares Irish family ancestry with his multi-award-winning sister Billie Eilish, reaffirmed his explicit support for the people of Palestine.

Irish solo artist Aaron Rowe, who had accompanied Sheeran during the tour’s Australian leg earlier this year and was scheduled to appear at ten upcoming dates across the United States, likewise announced his departure. While expressing gratitude toward Sheeran for his personal friendship and professional mentorship, Rowe emphasized that his conscience would not allow him to remain on the bill.

Rowe pointed directly to Ireland's own past to explain his moral obligation, noting that the Irish people possess an enduring historical understanding of violent occupation, forced famine, and systemic destruction. He stated that continuing his scheduled performances as if nothing had happened would cause him to lose his self-respect, especially when wealthy figures utilize financial power to suppress those who condemn the deaths of children and oppose military occupation.

The protest also reached Sheeran’s immediate musical backing ensemble, the traditional Irish group Beoga, who have maintained a close working relationship and friendship with the pop star spanning more than a decade. The band announced they were stepping down from the American concerts following the silencing of Macklemore by pro-Israel interest groups, acknowledging that while performing in massive stadiums was a rare milestone for a traditional outfit, they remained committed to peaceful dialogue as a vehicle to advance Palestinian rights.

Danish pop group Lukas Graham also confirmed their withdrawal through an online statement authored by lead singer Lukas Forchhammer. The frontman articulated the profound difficulty of witnessing global violence and civilian deaths from afar, emphasizing the universal necessity of speaking openly about wartime casualties and the fundamental right of all children to survive regardless of nationality.

Forchhammer further criticized the influence of commercial interests in dictating political expression within the music industry. He remarked that wealth should not give anyone ownership over public discourse, asserting that an individual's personal fortune or bank account balance must never determine who is permitted to speak or decide which human tragedies the public is allowed to acknowledge.

The coordinated mass exit of Danish, American, and Irish performers represents a major disruption for the logistical execution of Sheeran’s North American stadium itinerary. As the tour prepares to open in Philadelphia, the episode underscores how venue management leverage and activist pressure continue to reshape performance spaces and artistic solidarity on the global concert stage.
