Nord Stream Bombings Cast Long Shadow Over Germany-Ukraine Relations

The destruction of the Nord Stream pipelines in 2022 has served as a stark reminder of the complex web of energy politics that links Russia and Europe. The sabotage, which caused a colossal release of methane into the Baltic Sea, has not only underscored the risks associated with dependence on Russian gas but has also strained the already tense relationship between Ukraine and Germany.

Analysts argue that the blasts, which were the subject of a Hollywood drama, were emblematic of the failure of Berlin’s “change through trade” policy. For years, Germany had been reliant on Russia for natural gas, a dependency that became starkly apparent after the sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines, which were intended to transport 110 billion cubic meters of gas annually.

The 2022 explosions, which resulted in a vast release of methane and led to the halting of pipeline flows, were widely deemed acts of sabotage. They drew the attention of filmmaker Doug Liman, who planned a drama titled "Snake Island," based on Ukrainian divers who attempted to blow up the pipelines.

The real-life investigation into the sabotage led to the arrest of several divers, including Volodymyr Zhuravlev, a professional diver and consultant on Liman’s film set in Croatia. His arrest, along with that of another suspect, Serhii Kuznetsov, has brought the sabotage into the spotlight and underscored its impact on German energy security.

Claudia Kemfert, a professor at the Institute for Economic Research in Berlin, told Al Jazeera that the Nord Stream sabotage "reinforced a key lesson from the 2022 energy crisis: Germany had become far too dependent on Russian fossil gas." This overreliance, she noted, has now been addressed with a push toward diversification, renewable energy, and improved efficiency.

The sabotage of the pipelines, which were designed to deliver 55 percent of Germany’s natural gas, had profound implications for the country's economy and energy exports. It forced Germany to look for alternative sources of energy and spurred a rapid expansion of liquefied natural gas infrastructure.

Despite these efforts, the sabotage continues to cast a long shadow over Germany-Ukraine relations. Kemfert noted that the unresolved questions surrounding the Nord Stream attacks "remain politically sensitive" in the Berlin-Kyiv ties. The unresolved nature of the case has led to tension between the two nations, as Germany seeks answers to its energy security concerns while Ukraine faces its own challenges.

The situation is further complicated by the presence of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was never operational at the time of the explosions but still contained pressurized gas. Its presence raises questions about the extent of Russian involvement in the sabotage and its intentions moving forward.

As the world continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Nord Stream attacks, it becomes increasingly clear that the sabotage has altered the landscape of European energy security. It has forced countries to reassess their energy policies and has strained the relationships between Russia and its neighbors. For Germany and Ukraine, the consequences of the sabotage continue to be felt, with the possibility of reconciliation remaining a distant prospect.
