Tom Aspinall Relinquishes UFC Heavyweight Title Following Complications from Eye Injury

English heavyweight star Tom Aspinall has formally relinquished his UFC heavyweight championship after suffering persistent complications from a severe eye injury. The sudden announcement brings an unexpected pause to his reign at the pinnacle of mixed martial arts and marks a major turning point for the promotion's heaviest weight category.

The 33-year-old British mixed martial artist shared the difficult development through a personal statement on Instagram on Monday. In his message, Aspinall revealed that a recent training mishap had exacerbated his ongoing ocular problems, forcing him to halt his planned return to the Octagon.

Before the latest medical obstacle arose, the champion appeared to be on the verge of making a triumphant comeback to active competition. He had already finalized terms for his next scheduled bout and was actively engaged in sparring sessions, reporting that he felt in prime physical condition to defend his crown.

However, an unexpected incident during training caused renewed damage to his right eye, undoing months of progress. Describing the setback, Aspinall wrote: “I had previously agreed to a fight date and was back sparring, feeling great and ready to compete when an accident caused further damage to my right eye.”

The newly sustained trauma has introduced significant uncertainty regarding when the British standout might be medically cleared to compete at the highest level again. “This means more time away from the sport, and right now, the timing of my return is unclear,” Aspinall acknowledged regarding his extended absence.

Rather than leaving the division in limbo while he undergoes further medical treatment and recovery, Aspinall made the choice to surrender the championship. He noted that stepping aside voluntarily ensures the heavyweight division can remain active and competitive while he takes the time required to heal.

The origin of Aspinall’s physical struggles dates back to October 25, 2025, when he defended his title against French contender Ciryl Gane in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The bout, which served as the headline attraction at UFC 321, ended abruptly following a damaging sequence of events inside the cage.

During the opening round of the championship encounter, Aspinall suffered severe eye pokes from Gane that severely impaired his vision. Due to the extent of the damage, Aspinall was unable to continue the contest, prompting the referee and medical staff to rule the matchup a first-round no-contest.

In the aftermath of the curtailed bout in Abu Dhabi, Aspinall faced an arduous recovery journey. The 33-year-old underwent multiple surgical procedures over the ensuing months in a concentrated effort to repair the ocular damage and regain full sight in his right eye.

Despite the difficult rehabilitation and the promising initial phase of his return to sparring, the latest setback proved too substantial to overcome in the short term. The delicate nature of eye injuries presents unique risks in professional combat sports, where structural recovery must be complete before stepping back into live action.

Aspinall's decision to vacate the title creates an immediate resolution for the UFC's heavyweight championship picture. It directly clears the path for Ciryl Gane, who had previously claimed the interim heavyweight championship by defeating Alex Pereira in June, to be elevated to undisputed champion.

With Gane now stepping into the role of undisputed titleholder, the division gains stability and clarity after months of uncertainty. The promotion can proceed with championship defenses, while Gane cements his place at the summit of the division following his interim victory over Pereira.

Despite surrendering the belt he worked his entire career to capture, Aspinall explicitly clarified that this step does not signify the conclusion of his professional fighting career. He dismissed any notion of retirement, making it clear that his focus remains fixed on reclaiming his status once fully recovered.

“Stepping away from the title is not stepping away from the sport or the dream,” Aspinall affirmed in his public message. The statement reflected his ongoing determination to endure the physical rehabilitation required to rejoin the sport's elite ranks.

Aspinall concluded his message by promising his supporters that he will dedicate himself entirely to his recovery process. “I’ll continue doing everything I can to get healthy, get cleared and get back to competing as soon as possible,” he wrote, keeping the door open for a high-profile comeback once doctors grant him full medical clearance.
