Brazil’s Supreme Court has taken the extraordinary step of halting its official proceedings for a second consecutive day as an escalating wave of internal hostility, corruption allegations, and accusations of political bias plunges the nation’s highest judicial body into severe institutional turmoil.
The disruption comes after Chief Justice Luiz Edson Fachin called off Thursday’s scheduled deliberation, following an earlier cancellation earlier in the week. Cancellations of this nature remain extremely unusual for the high court, with Fachin instructing the bench to pause its work until it reconvenes on Tuesday.
The unprecedented shutdown is the direct result of a deepening rift among the court's justices, which erupted into public view following revelations stemming from a multi-billion-dollar financial scandal that has shaken Brazil's political and legal establishments.
The internal dispute initially caught fire on September 1, when Justice Andre Mendonca unsealed a collection of confidential federal police documents. The files contained material suggesting that disgraced financier Daniel Vorcaro had sought legal and strategic counsel from another prominent member of the bench, Justice Alexandre de Moraes.
According to the documents authorized for public release by Mendonca, who was appointed to the court by former President Jair Bolsonaro and is its sole openly evangelical member, the evidence includes approximately 30 text messages sent by Vorcaro to a telephone number linked to de Moraes.
The allegations strike directly at one of the country's most influential and polarizing judicial figures. De Moraes has risen to global prominence in recent years by spearheading several high-stakes cases, including presiding over the trial of Jair Bolsonaro for plotting a coup following his 2022 election defeat, a case that ultimately led to the former president serving a 27-year prison term.
De Moraes also drew significant international attention and fierce backlash from Brazil's right wing for ordering the nationwide suspension of major digital platforms, including X and Rumble, over non-compliance with judicial orders.
In response to the document leak, de Moraes strongly pushed back, accusing Mendonca of weaponizing his judicial powers to achieve partisan political objectives. De Moraes formally demanded an investigation to determine whether Mendonca held unauthorized discussions with Vorcaro outside the supervision of federal police investigators or public prosecutors.
The mounting hostilities will culminate on Tuesday when the high court gathers for a full plenary session. During this critical meeting, 10 of the sitting justices are slated to debate whether their colleague, de Moraes, should be placed under formal investigation regarding his alleged communications with the financier.
The bitter clash within the judiciary is the latest shockwave produced by the collapse of Banco Master. Vorcaro, the leader of the financial institution, was apprehended by law enforcement in November 2025 on charges of defrauding investors of billions of dollars in one of the most devastating banking failures in Brazilian history.
The subsequent downfall of Banco Master's private wealth division left behind an enormous financial hole, with accumulated debts exceeding $7bn. As investigators continue to unravel the institution's operations, politicians and officials across the ideological spectrum have found themselves entangled in the fallout.
The institutional breakdown on the Supreme Court comes at an extraordinarily delicate moment for Brazil, with general elections scheduled for October. The supreme bench's integrity is being questioned just as voters prepare to choose their next head of state in a fiercely contested presidential race.
Leftist incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is facing off against Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of the imprisoned former president. Both contenders have seized on the judiciary's internal strife, publicly calling for rigorous investigations into the conduct of the Supreme Court justices.
The Bolsonaro family itself has been directly linked to the widening Banco Master controversy. In May, an investigative report published by Intercept Brasil disclosed that Senator Flavio Bolsonaro had approached Vorcaro to secure financial backing for a documentary film about his father, titled *Dark Horse*.
While Senator Bolsonaro has insisted that his actions were entirely lawful and constituted nothing more than standard efforts to obtain private corporate sponsorship for the project, law enforcement scrutiny surrounding the production has rapidly intensified.
On Thursday, federal police conducted dozens of search-and-seizure raids connected to the Banco Master case. Among the targets were key individuals affiliated with the film project, including production company head Karina Gama and Congressman Mario Frias, who served as an executive producer on the documentary.
Following the raids, Senator Bolsonaro denounced the police actions, characterizing the expanding investigations as deliberate attempts at political interference designed to undermine his presidential campaign ahead of the upcoming nationwide vote.
