Iran Retaliates Against US by Attacking Jordan and UAE in Response to Larak Island Strike

Iran has escalated tensions in the region by attacking US bases in Jordan and military assets in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in retaliation for US strikes on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. This marks the first active exchange between the two nations since late July and raises concerns over the potential for further conflict.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the US attacks on Sunday night resulted in casualties among Iranian soldiers and civilians. Iran's Fars news agency quoted IRGC spokesperson Sardar Mohebi, who accused the US of committing a "strategic and fatal mistake." However, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) maintained that the attack on Larak Island was a necessary response to an imminent threat to civilian mariners, commercial shipping, and global commerce.

Following the US strikes, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the action as a "direct violation of national sovereignty and territorial integrity." In response, the IRGC conducted a combined missile and drone operation against the King Hussein and Al Azraq US military bases in Jordan. The strikes, according to the IRGC, caused significant damage to the bases' technical and repair infrastructure.

Jordan's army reported that its air defense systems intercepted eight missiles fired by Iran, preventing them from breaching the kingdom's airspace. A US official told Al Jazeera Arabic that the interception proved Iran was no longer the military power it once was. Additionally, the IRGC claimed to have intercepted an American MQ9 drone over the Strait of Hormuz, which then fell into the Gulf.

In the UAE, Iran's army launched dozens of drones at US military assets at the Al Menhad airbase. The attack, aimed at locations where US forces and helicopters were stationed, was described by Iran as revenge for the loss of IRGC members and civilians during the US strike on Larak Island.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized that the country was "not looking for war" but would "never sit still in the face of any aggression." He also warned that instability and unrest in the region were not in the interest of any country, suggesting that Iran's response was a direct challenge to the US's attempts to disrupt the Islamic Republic's control over the Strait of Hormuz.

The attack on Jordan is being seen as a political statement aimed at sending a message to Jordan that it is a target for supporting the US. Harlan Ullman, a retired US senior naval officer, explained that the attack was carried out with "malice aforethought" not necessarily to impose damage on the Americans but to inform Jordanians of the risks associated with their support for the US.

The recent attacks have raised concerns over the potential for a wider conflict in the region. The US's strikes on Larak Island were intended to protect global commerce and ensure the free flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for international shipping. However, Iran's retaliatory strikes have complicated diplomatic efforts to end the six-month-old war that has disrupted global oil supply and jolted the global economy.

As tensions rise, the international community is closely monitoring the situation, hoping that diplomatic efforts can prevent a full-blown conflict. The stakes are high, with the potential for widespread disruption to global oil markets and the risk of a regional conflict that could have far-reaching consequences.
