Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly commended an Indian pilot who was stabbed by a colleague during a commercial flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, crediting the aviator with preventing a potentially devastating midair catastrophe. The pilot, Captain Smit Machchhar, was seriously injured during the incident aboard Flydubai flight FZ1073, which was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

In a statement posted on his official X account on Wednesday evening, Netanyahu described Machchhar's conduct as exemplary. The Israeli leader said the pilot, despite suffering serious wounds, managed to fight back against his attacker, force open the cockpit door, and allow passengers and crew members to subdue the assailant. Netanyahu characterized these actions as having averted a catastrophic disaster in the skies.

The Israeli prime minister extended his well-wishes for Machchhar's recovery and described him as a genuine hero. He credited the pilot with saving the lives of 174 people on board, a group that included Israeli citizens as well as travelers of other nationalities.

According to the account provided by Netanyahu, the co-pilot of the flight is accused of stabbing Machchhar in what authorities believe was an attempt to seize control of the aircraft. The co-pilot has not been publicly identified. Netanyahu indicated that the suspect was taken into custody after the plane touched down in Saudi Arabia.

The incident unfolded on Wednesday morning, shortly after the aircraft departed from Dubai. The flight crew transmitted an emergency alert soon after takeoff, signaling that a serious situation was developing on board. The plane was subsequently diverted to Tabuk airport in Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Flydubai, the airline operating the flight, confirmed that all passengers were safe and accounted for following the emergency landing. Flight-tracking information from the Flightradar24 website identified the aircraft involved as a Boeing 737 Max 8, a widely used narrow-body jet that operates on many short and medium-haul routes.

Once on the ground in Tabuk, arrangements were made to transport the passengers to their intended destination. A rescue flight operated by Flydubai carried all those on board from the Saudi airport to Tel Aviv's Ben Gurion airport, arriving at 15:34 GMT. The successful completion of that journey brought an end to an ordeal that had begun with a routine departure from Dubai.

Upon the passengers' arrival in Israel, Netanyahu was present at Ben Gurion airport to receive them, a gesture that drew criticism from the political opposition. Yair Lapid, the leader of the opposition, denounced the prime minister's appearance as an act of cheap politics, pointing to the upcoming elections scheduled for later this month. Lapid's remarks highlighted the charged political atmosphere in which the aftermath of the incident is unfolding.

The episode raises significant questions about aviation security and the protocols that govern access to aircraft cockpits. Modern commercial aviation relies on layered security measures designed to prevent unauthorized individuals from gaining control of an aircraft, and the apparent involvement of a crew member in such an attack is likely to prompt scrutiny of screening and vetting procedures for flight personnel.

The role played by passengers and crew in overpowering the suspect also underscores the importance of coordinated action during in-flight emergencies. Industry guidance encourages flight attendants and travelers to respond decisively when a threat emerges, and in this case, the quick response of those on board appears to have been instrumental in bringing the situation under control.

The fact that the flight originated in Dubai and was bound for Tel Aviv, with an emergency diversion to Saudi Arabia, adds a further layer of diplomatic and logistical complexity. Coordination among authorities in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, and Israel was required to manage the landing, the detention of the suspect, and the onward transport of passengers.

For India, the incident brings attention to the professionalism of its expatriate aviation personnel, many of whom serve with airlines across the Middle East and beyond. Captain Machchhar's actions are likely to be held up as an example of composure and courage under extreme pressure, though he continues to recover from the injuries he sustained.

Flydubai has yet to release a detailed account of the events leading up to the stabbing, and the investigation is expected to examine how a member of the flight crew came to be in a position to carry out such an attack. The suspect's motives remain unclear, and no group has claimed responsibility for the incident.

The praise from Netanyahu places the pilot at the center of a story that has captured international attention, intertwining questions of security, heroism, and domestic politics. As passengers reunite with their families, the focus now turns to the recovery of Captain Machchhar and to the inquiries that will determine exactly what transpired in the cockpit of flight FZ1073.
